All too often organizations focus on developing a strategic plan and then it sits on the shelf for three years until it the process is undertaken again.  Some do develop plans and tactics to achieve their outlined goals, but many times these are cumbersome and consume inordinate amounts of time and attention.  Increasingly, organizations are turning to more nimble and adaptive approaches.


Staff throughout the organization are being engaged to think strategically in making key decisions.  Good ideas can come from anyone, not just leaders.  Strategic thinkers are future-conscious, focused on the long-term, curious, risk-takers, able to prioritize, nimble, creative and learners.  Wouldn’t it be better to develop the capacity in consortial staff to think strategically every day where they weigh up how to devote their time attention and other resources?  In this webinar, three experts with a wealth of experience with strategy development, management and assessment will share their thoughts on how this might be achieved.



1.       Gain an understanding of the difference between strategic thinking and strategic planning and how it can be used to further consortial work.

2.       Learn about the context that sets the stage for strategic action by individuals and organizations.

3.       Learn about a few simple tools that can be used by an individual to guide their own actions - or can be used by an organization in formal strategic planning.


Speaker Bios

Stig Lanesskog, Chief Executive Officer - The Claremont Colleges Services, is a highly-skilled executive, has a wealth of experience both in higher education and in the corporate sector as a professional consultant.  He currently oversees 34 shared services for The Claremont Colleges and works with the presidents and other senior leaders of the campuses to facilitate and implement strategic initiatives.


John Bryson, McKnight Presidential Professor of Planning and Public Affairs, University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, is an expert in the areas of leadership, strategic management, and the design of organizational and community change processes.  He wrote the best-selling and award-winning Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations, 5th Edition (2018), and co-wrote with Barbara C. Crosby the award-winning Leadership for the Common Good, 2nd Edition (2005).  He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.


Barbara McFadden, Principal - McFadden, Rocklin and Associates, is a dynamic leader with expertise in organizational and human dynamics, and the establishment and operation of effective joint ventures.  She recently retired as the Executive Director of the Big Ten Academic Alliance where she was responsible for leading and directing collaborative academic programs across the member universities. Recently, she was a co-author of “Science Funding and Short-Term Economic Activity,” published in The Journal Science.
